Conductive ceramics
Beta alumina
Ionotec manufactures ion-conductive ceramic membranes in various shapes and sizes. The conductive ceramic
material is usually beta-alumina, a hard dense polycrystalline ceramic in which the mobile ion may
be sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), silver (Ag+), lithium (Li+), strontium (Sr2+), barium(Ba2+) or gadolinium
(Gd3+). Other types of conductive ceramic may be possible. Most applications of beta-alumina ceramics
require conductivity to sodium (Na+) or to potassium (K+). For both types of conductive ceramic we can supply
beta-alumina ceramics stabilized either with lithium or with magnesium, with or without zirconium oxide added
as a strengthening agent. Ceramic membranes are available as thin-walled tubes, flat discs, or flat
plates.
Dimensions
Beta-alumina tubes can be supplied fitted with insulating ceramic headers. Prices are dependent on
quantity, type and fittings. Standard product dimensions are shown in the tables below; Ionotec's manufacturing process is quite flexible and adaptable to individual
requirements.
